Interested in Volunteering for a medical mission
With the assistance of Help A Friend Foundation, our plan is to continue planning for two medical trips a year. Currently, we are the only physician-based medical care the 30,000 people of the Marovo Lagoon can count on. Thus far, our trips have been running around June and November.
We are in need of dentists, physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and pharmacists to assist with operating our mobile clinics. We also need a certain number of non-medical people on each trip to support the medical team.
Typically, we leave the U.S. and spend the night in Brisbane, Australia. The next day we fly to Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands. If everything goes according to schedule, we connect that day to our final flight on a Twin Otter aircraft to Seghe. Upon our arrival at Seghe, the staff of Uepi Island Resort will be waiting to transfer us to the resort.
Since we are sponsored by a 501(c)3 organization, we follow IRS guidelines for the medical trip. During the week, we are required to work eight hours per day. We have weekends off.
Our typical day starts with breakfast at 7:30 a.m.. We are in the speedboats and on our way to a local village or the Seghe Hospital by 8:00 am. We then set up our clinic and see patients for the rest of the day. We normally return to the resort by 4:00 pm.
When we are not working, ie. later in the afternoon or on weekends, you can participate in lots of activities. Visit www.uepi.com to see everything available.
At the end of the trip, we fly back to Brisbane and spend the night. We then fly straight back to the U.S. the following day. The trip length is typically 16 to 18 days. Remember, It takes three days to get there and two days to get back because of the international dateline.
