Upon completion of the solar power system during the June 2009 trip, our trip leader, Allan Daly was bestowed with a great honor. He and the chief solar engineer, Gordon Moreshead, were working in the battery building when nurse Alicia called out, “Allan, how do you spell your name?”
Allan replied, “A L L A N.”
“How do you spell your last name?” Alicia asked.
“Why?” Allan questioned as he picked up his video camera and headed out to meet Alicia. They went into the maternity ward and Alicia explained that a baby boy was born at 9:26 the previous night. The nurse and the mother were so happy to have the solar powered lights on, for it made coordinating the birth so much easier than by candlelight. After the birth, the mother wanted an honorable name to name the little boy and the nurse suggested Allan Daly – the person behind the solar power installation.
Allan was deeply touched and honored to have this child named after him. He was thrilled to know there would be a little Allan Daly running around the Marovo Lagoon for some time to come. This was one of the best days of big Allan’s life.
